There is a kind of soil that looks like the best news a farmer could ask for. The seed hits the ground and immediately something green breaks the surface. No waiting. No wondering. Overnight, there is life where yesterday there was nothing.
If you didn’t know any better, you’d call it the most fertile patch in the whole field.
But Jesus tells us the truth about that ground. The problem was never the speed of the sprout. The problem was the shallowness underneath it. There was a shelf of rock just below the surface, and that rock let the plant look alive while refusing to let it get alive.
Roots need somewhere to go. And when there is nowhere to go down, there is no way to hold on.
Then Jesus stops talking about dirt and starts talking about us. He says the rocky-ground person is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy — but has no root, and endures only for a while. When tribulation or persecution comes, that person falls away.
Here’s the Sugar-Free Gospel™ truth: that is the formation gap. That’s the distance between receiving and rooting. Between the part of faith, you can feel on a good Sunday and the part of faith that holds you on the worst Tuesday of your life.
A lot of us have a faith that sprang up fast and never went down deep. We mistook the excitement for depth. We mistook the goosebumps for ground.
And the sun is going to rise. It always does.
Beloved, tribulation is not a maybe — Jesus said “when,” not if. The heat is not the enemy of your faith; the heat is the revealer of your faith. It simply shows you what your roots have been doing while nobody was watching.
So the question this morning is not “Did you receive the word with joy?” Plenty of withered plants did.
The question is: what is under your surface?
Is there depth down there — or is there a shelf of rock you have never let God break up
Don’t settle for soil that lies.
Let Him dig.
Let Us Go Into The Throne Room Of Grace And Mercy.™
Father, break up the rock in us. Where we have settled for a faith that only looks alive, give us a faith that is alive — rooted, anchored, and ready for the heat. We don’t want to wither in the day of trouble. Send the roots down deep and hold us when the sun rises.

Now, may the God who plants the word in you guard its roots, so that what He started in shallow ground He finishes in solid ground.
